An air-to-water heat pump takes heat from the outdoor air to heat the water in your central heating circuit. It supplies your radiators or underfloor heating and can produce domestic hot water.

Advantages of an air-to-water heat pump

  • Connects to the existing central heating
  • Also produces domestic hot water
  • Lets you move away from gas or heating oil
  • Particularly efficient with underfloor heating

How does the project work?

We study the insulation, heat emitters and your hot water needs, then size the heat pump. The installation includes the outdoor unit, the indoor module or cylinder, the hydraulic connections and commissioning.

Air-to-water or air-to-air?

Without central heating, or to heat a few rooms with the option of cooling, an air-to-air heat pump is often simpler. For a budget, see our heat pump prices page.

What we check before the quote

  • Your radiators or underfloor heating, and the water temperature they need
  • The home’s insulation
  • Your hot water needs, based on the number of occupants
  • Space for the indoor module and the hot water cylinder
  • The location of the outdoor unit
  • The power supply

Monoblock or split?

In a monoblock heat pump, the whole refrigerant circuit is in the outdoor unit and heating water is piped into the house. In a split heat pump, refrigerant lines connect the outdoor unit to an indoor module. The choice depends on your home and the distance between the two.

Frequently asked questions

Can an air-to-water heat pump replace my boiler?

Often yes, provided the home is well enough insulated and the heat emitters are suitable. In some cases a hybrid solution that keeps the boiler as back-up is a better fit.

Do I need to change my radiators?

Not necessarily. An air-to-water heat pump works best with heating water at a moderate temperature: underfloor heating or properly sized radiators. We check your radiators during the survey.

Does an air-to-water heat pump produce domestic hot water?

Yes, with a hot water cylinder connected to the heat pump or built into the indoor unit, depending on the model chosen.

Can an air-to-water heat pump cool in summer?

Some reversible models can, especially with underfloor heating or fan coils. It is not the same as air conditioning: we advise you based on your expectations.
